How to Calculate Age: Exact Age in Years, Months and Days (Step-by-Step Guide)
How old are you, exactly? Most of us can answer in years without thinking, but forms for school admissions, government jobs, visas and pensions often want your age in years, months and days on a specific date. Getting it wrong by even one day can mean missing an age limit. In this guide you will learn how to calculate age by hand, why months and leap years make it tricky, and how to get an instant, accurate answer with our free age calculator.
What Does “Exact Age” Mean?
Your exact age is the time that has passed between your date of birth and a chosen date, written as completed years, then completed months, then the remaining days. For example, “24 years, 3 months and 10 days”. This is called chronological age, and it is the version used on official documents around the world.
You can also express the same span of time as a single unit, such as total months (useful for babies), total weeks (common in pregnancy) or total days (fun for milestones like your 10,000th day, which arrives at about 27 years and 4 months).
How to Calculate Your Age Manually: Step by Step
Let’s use a real example. Someone was born on 15 August 1995 and we want their age on 5 November 2026.
Step 1: Count the full years
Subtract the birth year from the target year: 2026 − 1995 = 31. Their birthday (15 August) has already passed by 5 November, so they have completed 31 years. If the birthday had not come yet, you would subtract one year.
Step 2: Count the full months
Start from the last birthday, 15 August 2026, and count whole months: 15 September is one month, 15 October is two months. 15 November has not arrived yet, so that is 2 months.
Step 3: Count the remaining days
From 15 October to 31 October is 16 days, and then 1 to 5 November adds 5 more. That makes 21 days.
Answer: 31 years, 2 months and 21 days.
The Borrowing Method (Subtraction Shortcut)
Many teachers show a quicker way that works like subtraction with borrowing. Write the dates as year, month and day, and subtract the birth date from the target date:
- Days: 5 − 15 is negative, so borrow the days of the previous month (October has 31 days): 5 + 31 − 15 = 21 days, and take 1 away from the months.
- Months: (11 − 1) − 8 = 2 months.
- Years: 2026 − 1995 = 31 years.
If the months also go negative, borrow 12 months from the years. Our calculator gives the same answer, and also handles the tricky cases automatically, such as birthdays on the 29th, 30th or 31st of a month.
Why Calculating Age Is Trickier Than It Looks
- Months have different lengths. One “month” can be 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, so you cannot simply divide days by 30.
- Leap years add a day. Every fourth year has 366 days, except century years not divisible by 400 (2000 was a leap year, 1900 was not).
- Time zones. A person born just before midnight in one country may technically have been born on the next day somewhere else. Official records use the local date of birth.
- Cut-off dates. Schools and exams often ask for age on a specific date, such as 1 January or 31 March, not today.
What If You Were Born on 29 February?
People born on a leap day, sometimes called “leaplings”, only get a real birthday every four years. In common years, some countries legally treat 1 March as the day you complete another year, while others use 28 February. Our calculator completes the year on 28 February in non-leap years. If an official form in your country uses 1 March, simply add one day.
Age Calculation in Different Cultures
Not every culture has counted age the same way. Under traditional East Asian age reckoning, a baby was considered one year old at birth and gained a year every Lunar New Year. South Korea officially moved to the international system for legal and administrative purposes in June 2023, so today almost every country uses the same method described in this guide.
The Fastest Way: Use an Online Age Calculator
Doing the steps above by hand is good practice, but it is easy to slip up on month lengths. With our free age calculator you just:
- Enter your date of birth.
- Keep today’s date or choose any other date, such as an exam cut-off.
- Press the blue Calculate button.
You instantly see your age in years, months and days, plus your age in total months, weeks, days, hours and minutes, the weekday you were born and a countdown to your next birthday.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting to subtract a year when the birthday has not happened yet this year.
- Dividing total days by 365 and rounding – this ignores leap years and gives the wrong months and days.
- Mixing up date formats. 03/04/2000 is 3 April in the UK and Pakistan, but 4 March in the US.
- Using today’s date when the form asks for your age on a different cut-off date.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my age in days?
Count the days between your birth date and today, including every leap day. The easiest way is to use the age calculator, which shows the total number of days you have lived. You can also use our days between dates calculator for any two dates.
How many days until my next birthday?
The age calculator shows this under the results, and our birthday calculator adds your zodiac sign and birthstone too.
Can I calculate my pet’s age the same way?
You can calculate how long your pet has been alive in the same way, but to compare it with human age you need a different formula, because dogs and cats age much faster. Try the dog age calculator or cat age calculator.
Conclusion
Calculating your exact age comes down to three steps: count the full years, then the full months, then the leftover days, borrowing from the previous month when needed.
