About the Hours Calculator

The hours calculator works out how long you worked between two clock times. It subtracts unpaid breaks, handles overnight shifts that cross midnight, and converts the result to decimal hours so you can fill in a timesheet or check your pay.

How to Use the Hours Calculator

  1. Enter your start time and end time.
  2. Add your unpaid break in minutes.
  3. Optionally enter your hourly rate and press Calculate.

Formula and How It Works

Hours worked = end time − start time − break. If the end time is earlier than the start time, 24 hours are added because the shift ended the next day. Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60, so 7 hours 30 minutes becomes 7.5 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. For example, 45 minutes is 0.75 hours and 20 minutes is 0.33 hours.

Does it work for night shifts?

Yes. If you start at 22:00 and finish at 06:00, the calculator knows the shift crossed midnight and returns 8 hours.
