About the Data Storage Converter
Convert file sizes and storage between bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes. It also includes binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB), which explain why a 1 TB drive shows less space on your computer.
How to Use the Data Storage Converter
- Enter the size.
- Choose the units to convert from and to.
- Press Calculate.
Formula and How It Works
1 byte = 8 bits. Decimal units use powers of 1,000 (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). Binary units use powers of 1,024 (1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes).
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?
Drive makers use decimal terabytes, while Windows counts in binary units. 1,000,000,000,000 bytes is about 931 GiB.
Is Mbps the same as MB/s?
No. Mbps is megabits per second. Divide by 8 to get megabytes per second.
